Situation
Due to its condition, the operator defined a section of a DN 550 mild steel cement-lined potable water pipe that supplies the remote mining town of Paraburdoo, located about 1,500 kilometres from Perth as a high risk. The one-kilometre-long section of the pipeline crosses a creek and runs through areas of cultural heritage sensitivity.
Paraburdoo is located on the edge of the desert with temperatures rising above 40° C. The trenchless method did not expose the crews to the heat longer than necessary.
The CO2 emissions on site as well as the amount of earth movement can be reduced by over 90% with a trenchless technology compared to traditional dig-and-lay. This fit into the operator’s target to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.
