Highspeed for Monaco - Trenchless pipe rehabilitation and fibre optic installation with Primus Line®

The project to renovate a drinking water pipe in Monaco is characterised by the buzzword ‘high speed’ in two respects. Firstly, the renovation had to be completed before the start of the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Secondly, fibre optic cables for high-speed internet had to be laid in the Principality at the same time. Our installation partner Altero Travaux Publics from France was able to master both challenges reliably and quickly with Primus Line® technology.

Efficient and traffic-friendly solution

The DN 150 grey cast iron drinking water pipeline with a cement mortar lining was rehabilitated in May 2022 on behalf of Société Monégasque des Eaux, Monaco's water supply company. The Primus Line® Rehab System DN 150 PN 56 was used in two parallel pipes, each with a length of 180 feet. The Primus Line® Rehab System DN 150 PN 56 was used in two parallel pipes, each with a length of 55 meters. It had to be ensured that a maximum flow velocity of 10.66 feet per second was not exceeded. Each section was pulled in through two 45-degree bends, one 22-degree bend and one 11-degree bend. The camera inspection in advance revealed heavy incrustations in the pipes, which made intensive and time-consuming cleaning of the pipes necessary. The pipes were inspected and cleaned in advance using a camera inspection. With the installation of the special Primus Line connectors for connection to the pipe network and the final pressure test, the installation took two weeks.

An open renovation would not have been an option due to the complex pipe route along the main traffic artery, the ‘Boulevard de la Turbie’, and the important pedestrian path, the ‘Escalier du Mont-Agel’ staircase. The installation of the Primus Line® trenchless rehabilitation technology had hardly any impact on traffic. Both the road and access via the stairs remained open to traffic and pedestrians throughout the entire construction period.

Fibre optic cable in the annular space

During the project, a fibre optic cable was installed in each of the two renovated pipes. The water supplier Monégasque des Eaux uses the fibre optic cables for internal purposes. They were already inserted during the factory folding process of the liner into a U-shape and then pulled into the old pipe together using a cable winch. After being installed, the flexible pipes were brought into their round shape using compressed air, with the fibre optic cables remaining in the annular gap. At the rehabilitation ends, they were guided out of the old pipe via adapter pieces. Both cables were successfully tested. In addition to the insertion of micro cable ducts for fibre optic or glass fibre cables, it is also possible to insert signal cables and locating tapes, for example.

The Primus Line® annular space design

Primus Line® is a loose-fit method of trenchless pipe rehabilitation. This means that an annular space (i. e. a void) remains between the inserted liner and the existing pipe. Thanks to its multi-layer, Kevlar®-reinforced structure, the Primus Liner functions like a new pipe in the existing pipe and absorbs the entire internal operating pressure without passing it on to the old pipe. With a wall thickness of just six or eight millimetres, the diameter is only minimally reduced. In addition, the low material roughness of the inner layer (friction coefficient k = 0.028 mm) ensures an optimum flow velocity and an ideal volume flow.

Advantages and possible applications

The Primus Line® developers made a conscious decision in favour of this design as it offers numerous advantages during installation and extends the possible uses of the pressure pipes to be renewed:

  • Pull-in through bends: Smooth installation through bends of up to 90 degrees and even through tight bends with a small radius (r = 1.5xD at 90 degrees).
  • Flexibility with pipe diameters: Overcomes different pipe diameters along a pipe (due to repairs or when different pipe materials have been combined).
  • Pipe rededication: Primus Line® turns almost any pipe into a pressurised line for water, gas or oil.
  • Targeted diameter reduction: Optimum balance between flow velocity and required pipe capacity.
  • Drainage of water accumulations: Allows water to flow freely between the liner and the old pipe to the nearest pressure relief valve, preventing damage caused by water bubbles and dynamic pressure fluctuations.

With this project, the Société Monégasque des Eaux, in collaboration with Rädlinger primus line GmbH and our French installation partner Altero Travaux Publics, has created a forward-looking solution for Monaco's infrastructure that meets the highest standards.
